Workshop slabs along Burrel Road and Edison Road
Workshops and trade units collect years of marks on their floors. Painted walkways, the outline of old racking, spilled coatings, glued carpet in a back office and a dusty skin that never set hard all stand between the slab and the next finish. Lay compound or flooring on top and the bond will be only as strong as the weakest of those layers.
Grinding removes them. A floor grinder carries rotating heads set with diamond segments, and each pass shaves a thin layer off the top of the concrete or screed. Ridges, trowel marks and the lip where two bays meet come down with it, and the exposed surface is open enough for a primer to soak in.
At Compass Point Business Park or on Roman Way Industrial Estate, a new tenant might want vinyl in the office, a coating in the workshop, or simply a sound, dust free slab. Each starts the same way. After grinding, the next step might be St Ives floor levelling for the office or a resin system for the workshop, laid by a resin contractor, because K & B does not lay resin or polished concrete.
We are contractors, so we do not sell or hire out grinders or diamond tooling. The machine and extraction come with our team.
Where a coating is thick or the area is very large, shot blasting or scarifying can be quicker than grinding. Both fall under our floor preparation work. If the slab itself is cracked or breaking up, it needs concrete floor repair before any surface work.
Glue, garages and extension lips in St Ives homes
Extensions and open plan kitchens are the usual St Ives home projects, and each needs the new floor to meet the older slab at the same height. Sometimes it does not quite. If the new slab finishes a few millimetres proud, grinding the high edge brings the two together before a thin latex coat for vinyl or a new floor goes on.
Old glue is the other household job. Lift a carpet or sheet vinyl and the slab beneath is often crusted with adhesive that new compound will not hold onto. Grinding takes it back to clean concrete. A garage being turned into a room may also need paint or oil marks cut away.
There are limits. Grinding takes off local high spots, but a floor that slopes or sags across the room needs levelling or screeding after the high points are ground. Going too deep into a screed can leave it below its minimum thickness.
Dust is controlled throughout. Concrete and screed contain silica, so we grind only with extraction attached and sheet off the rest of the house.
