Grinding slabs at Northfield Business Park and The Shade
When a unit on a Soham trading estate is refitted, the existing slab tends to show its history. Old floor paint, worn epoxy patches, glue from a previous office covering, and a powdery top layer that never cured hard are all common. Lay compound, screed or new flooring on that and it will not bond properly.
Diamond grinding fixes the surface rather than the shape. Rotating heads fitted with diamond segments shave the top of the slab away in thin passes, cutting off ridges, trowel marks and the lips where adjacent bays were poured at different heights. What is left is clean, open concrete that takes primer well.
The Local Plan allows Northfield Business Park to be extended, and land on both sides of The Shade is allocated for employment. On new units, grinding usually comes after the slab is cast, to take off laitance before the next layer goes on. On older ones, it strips what the last tenant left.
We stop at preparation. Resin systems and polished concrete are laid by specialists, not K & B, though a ground floor is the right starting point for them. We do not sell or hire out grinders or diamond tooling either.
For a floor that needs real strength once the old finish is off, look at higher strength screed. Thick coatings over big areas may be quicker to shot blast, which sits within our floor preparation work.
Grinding in Soham homes, extensions and garages
Houses need grinding less often, but when they do it is usually for one of three reasons.
The first is old adhesive. Take up a carpet or vinyl that has been down for years and the slab underneath is often coated in hardened glue, which a new compound will not grip reliably. Grinding takes it back to bare concrete.
The second is a lip at an extension. On 1950s council estates such as Downfields, an extension or a knock-through kitchen is a common project. Where the new slab finishes a few millimetres proud of the old floor, grinding the high edge helps the two meet. A thin Soham latex screed can then smooth both for vinyl.
The third is a garage turned into a room, where paint and oil marks need cutting back.
Two limits apply. Grinding cannot flatten a floor that dips over a wide area, and on a screed it is kept shallow so the layer stays strong. Dust is controlled throughout: concrete contains silica, so every grinder runs with extraction and doorways are sheeted off.
