Concrete Floor Grinding in Chatteris

Our own team grinds concrete slabs and screeds in Chatteris with diamond heads and dust extraction, taking off high spots, ridges, laitance, adhesive and floor paint so levelling compound, screed or new flooring has a clean base. Workshop and storage floors in the council's light industrial units at Prospect Way, on the South Fens Enterprise Park and in the warehouses on Iretons Way are typical candidates for repair or levelling, and grinding is often where that work starts.

Grinding Chatteris unit floors on Prospect Way and Iretons Way

Workshop and storage floors take years of wear. Pallet truck traffic polishes some areas and breaks the edges of others. Paint is spilled, lines are marked out, and office corners get carpet stuck straight to the slab. By the time a unit at Prospect Way or the South Fens Enterprise Park changes tenant, its floor surface may be several different materials.

Diamond grinding removes those surface layers. Rotating heads cut the top of the slab in thin passes, taking off paint, thin coatings, adhesive and laitance, and bringing down ridges and the lips where concrete bays have settled at slightly different heights. The result is clean, open concrete ready for a primer.

The next stage depends on how the unit will be used. Office and trade counter areas usually go on to levelling compound. Storage areas may need a hard wearing screed, and damaged sections need concrete floor repair first. If the plan is resin or polished concrete, a specialist lays that after us, because we prepare the floor but do not lay either.

Where a warehouse floor covers a large open area, or carries a thick coating, shot blasting or scarifying may be quicker than grinding, and both sit under floor preparation. The large mixed scheme planned to the south east of the town, with a school and a business park, may add more commercial floors in time. Whatever the size, the machines and crew are our own; none of our grinders or tooling is for sale or hire.

Chatteris extensions, garages and lifted floor coverings

Domestic grinding in Chatteris tends to be small and targeted. When one of the town's late twentieth century detached homes or bungalows is extended, the new floor on fen ground goes down over insulation and a membrane, and where it meets the old floor at the opening a small lip is common. Grinding the high edge back lets the two meet before a latex smoothing coat or tiles go down.

Garage conversions start the same way. A painted or oil marked garage floor needs grinding to sound concrete before any screed or primer is applied, and our garage floor guide covers the insulation and levels that follow.

Lifting carpet or vinyl in one of the older Victorian houses near the centre can expose adhesive or paint that has to come off before new flooring. Indoors, we grind only with extraction running and the room sealed off.

There is a limit to what grinding achieves. It takes down high spots but will not correct a floor that slopes or sags across a room, and taking too much off a screed can leave it thinner than its minimum depth. In that case we grind the peaks and then level or screed the rest.

FAQs

Concrete Floor Grinding in Chatteris: your questions

How deep does grinding cut into a Chatteris slab?

Only as deep as the job requires. Diamond heads remove the surface in thin passes, so paint, adhesive or laitance can come off without cutting deep into the slab. On a screed we are careful not to take so much that it drops below its minimum depth. Where a Chatteris floor needs more height changed than that, levelling or screeding is the answer.

Should I grind or shot blast a warehouse floor?

That comes down to the size of the floor and what is on it. Grinding suits removing high spots, lips between bays, paint and thin coatings, and it gives fine control near walls. For a very large open floor or a thick coating, shot blasting or scarifying can be quicker. We look at the unit and recommend one. For the same service nearby, see concrete floor grinding in Ely.

Will grinding make a Chatteris garage dusty inside the house?

Not with the right controls. Grinding concrete or screed throws up respirable crystalline silica dust, which is why a dust extractor is attached to the machine every time. The garage is sealed from the house, doors are sheeted and adjoining rooms protected, so the rest of the home stays clean and usable while the floor is prepared.
