Extension joins and lifted floors around Whittlesey
A floor grinder works like a heavy sander with diamond segments in place of paper. The heads spin against the concrete and remove it in thin layers, taking off whatever stands proud. On a house floor that usually means one of three things.
The first is the join with an extension. When a single storey extension is added, its insulated floor is meant to finish flush with the original rooms, but slabs poured years apart rarely meet perfectly. A small lip along the old external wall line shows straight through LVT. Grinding the high edge down gives a smooth line that compound can then feather out.
The second is what is left after an old floor covering comes up. Carpet gripper holes, dark adhesive, vinyl glue and old paint all stop a primer from bonding. Grinding cuts through them to clean concrete.
The third is newer screed. Homes built between 2000 and 2014 are 8% of Whittlesey, with many more since, and developer floors on new houses can need snagging work. Trowel marks, ridges at bay edges and a weak top surface can be ground off. We check the screed depth before starting, so the floor keeps enough material after grinding, and a damaged patch may need relaying instead.
Garages being converted bring oil stains and paint. Our garage floor screed guide explains the build-up that follows. A grinder cannot correct a floor that falls away across a whole room: we grind the high spots, then level the Whittlesey floor with compound or screed it.
Factory and processing floors in Whittlesey
Whittlesey's working floors belong to brickmaking and food processing, with the King's Dyke brickworks still running and McCain making chips. Floors in buildings of that kind tend to need repair or resurfacing in time, and grinding is how the worn top is made ready for it.
On an industrial slab, grinding removes worn paint lines, failed thin coatings, ridges at construction joints and laitance from earlier toppings. It leaves a sound, open surface for a hard wearing screed or a repair mortar. Where cracks, spalled joints or broken areas are found once the surface is clean, those are dealt with as concrete floor repairs.
Resin and polished concrete are outside our work. If a resin floor is planned, we can grind the slab ready and hand it over to the resin contractor. For a very large area or a thick coating, shot blasting or scarifying is usually faster than grinding, and both come under floor preparation.
Dust needs planning in a working building. Concrete and screed contain silica, so every grinder we run has extraction attached, and neighbouring areas are screened off. Nothing is sold or hired: our machines and tooling stay with our team. For the same work about 5 miles away, see floor grinding in Peterborough.
