Which screed suits which St Ives home
Census 2021 recorded 16,818 people living in the St Ives built-up area, and their houses lean heavily towards one era: 51% went up between 1973 and 1999. Most owners here live in a semi or a detached house from the 1950s to the 1990s, and that tells you a lot about what the floors in town tend to need.
Put a rear extension on one of those houses, or knock the kitchen through to the dining room, and the new floor has to line up with the old slab to the millimetre. That is where a pumped liquid screed for open plan floors earns its place: it settles flat quickly and fills around heating pipes if the room is to be heated.
The town has only a small number of houses from before 1919. When one of them has a solid floor that has cracked or lost its damp protection, we take it out and relay it by hand in traditional sand and cement screed, the same material that suits garages and wet rooms.
Then there is the river. The Great Ouse has flooded St Ives more than once, which is why defences went in along both banks in 2006 to 2007. In the riverside parts of town that sit lower, a floor may need a membrane under a cement based screed, because calcium sulphate should be kept out of rooms that could get wet.
Off Houghton Road, Houghton Grange and The Spires are adding new homes. If the drawings for a plot there name a CA grade, the page on anhydrite flow screed tells you what that means. And if your floor is solid but simply uneven, self levelling compound may be all it needs.

Build timing and access around St Ives
On a St Ives build the screed falls halfway through, so the other trades decide when we can come. We need the room closed in against the weather, with windows and outside doors fitted and any wet plaster done. If pipes are going under the floor, your heating installer should have them down and pressure tested. Pencil in the pour once all that is close, and let the drying period decide when the tiler or floor fitter arrives, rather than squeezing the screed to suit their diary.
For a pumped pour, the mixer and pump have to stand close enough for the hose to reach the door. A house with its own drive makes that easy. If yours is on a tighter street with restricted parking, a shared path or a narrow side passage, mention it at the quoting stage and we will plan around it before the day. Sand and cement comes in smaller loads that we wheel in by barrow, which can be the better option on a cramped site.
Commercial units need different thinking. Along Edison Road and Burrel Road, on Roman Way Industrial Estate and at Compass Point Business Park on Stocks Bridge Way there are workshops, trade units and warehouses whose floors may need repairing, levelling or a tougher screed when a new tenant moves in. That work comes under our commercial screeding service.
