Floor Levelling and Self Levelling Screed in Peterborough

Across Peterborough, we flatten floors with a poured levelling compound, so whatever goes down next, be it LVT, vinyl, big tiles or engineered wood, starts out true. The city has a wide spread of business floors: Eastern Industries at Fengate, Gateway Peterborough, Orton Southgate and the Cygnet Park and Kingston Park business parks at Hampton. Refits there, and in homes where an extension meets an older floor, are exactly where a thin, flat compound earns its place.

Refitting units at Fengate and Orton Southgate

Peterborough City Council lists Eastern Industries at Fengate and Gateway Peterborough among its established employment areas, and Orton Southgate has industrial units too. Hampton, south of the city, includes the Cygnet Park and Kingston Park business parks.

When a unit changes hands, the floor often needs attention, because it may have carried years of racking, pallet trucks and spills. Old slabs and screeds are often dusty, patched and uneven, and a new tenant wants carpet tiles, vinyl or LVT laid flat.

Under BS 8204, lay a 2m straightedge down and measure what light shows beneath: SR1 means 3mm at most, SR2 5mm, SR3 10mm. Thin sheet finishes often demand SR1, because dips show through them.

Expect compound at 2mm or so up to about 10mm, with a handful of products rated deeper. It flows smooth, dries quickly and keeps the fit-out on programme.

Warehouse and distribution floors are a different matter. There, the work often calls for high strength screeds, repairs or grinding rather than a thin compound. We will say which it is. Our concrete floor grinding and screed repair services cover floors that need more than levelling.

Pile compound thick onto a Fengate slab that really wants screeding and the result may crack and lift, so the base gets looked at before any product is chosen. For larger fit-outs our commercial screeding service takes over.

Levelling homes in Bretton, Orton and Hampton

In a house, levelling happens just before the new floor goes down. Whether the home is in Bretton, the Ortons, Hampton or any other part of Peterborough, the aim is the same: a flat, primed surface the flooring can bond to.

The usual trouble spots are uneven old floors, and the join where an extension meets the original house. Semis account for 33% of Peterborough housing, and extending one to the rear nearly always leaves that line. Feathered compound blends it so the new flooring carries on with no lip.

Post-war building, from 1945 to 1972, accounts for 19% of houses and flats here. Where an older solid floor is sound but has dips, a thin compound is often all it needs before LVT.

Old tiles, calcium sulphate screed, cement screed and bare concrete want a primer apiece, never one for all. If the floor needs cleaning back or repair first, see our floor preparation page. This is not timber floor sanding, and it is not a bag of compound mixed in a bucket; it is a prepared, primed and measured base.

FAQs

Floor Levelling in Peterborough: your questions

How thick can self levelling compound go on a Peterborough floor?

Most compounds are designed for about 2mm to 10mm, and a few products go deeper. Beyond that, the floor usually needs a screed rather than compound. Pouring compound too deep can lead to cracking and loss of bond, so we measure the floor before deciding.

Can you level a unit floor at Cygnet Park over a weekend?

Often, yes, depending on the size and the base. Fast drying compounds can take foot traffic quickly, which suits refits that must work around trading hours. We agree the timing and a fixed written price before we start, and we give the flooring contractor the drying times.

Do I need to level my floor before laying LVT?

Usually. LVT and vinyl follow every dip in the base, and most makers expect SR1, meaning no more than 3mm under a 2m straightedge. In a Peterborough house with an older floor or an extension join, a thin compound over the right primer is the normal way to get there.
