Self Levelling Screed and Floor Levelling in March

Bumpy or sloping March floors are evened out by K & B using self levelling compound, leaving a true base for engineered wood, LVT, vinyl or big format tiles. Typical cases are old solid floors, joins between a house and a new extension, and commercial refits. The local detail that matters is March's trade base: units on March Industrial Estate and off Hostmoor Avenue have been converted to new uses such as self storage, work that often needs a flat, repaired floor.

Refit floors on March Industrial Estate

March Industrial Estate sits about a mile north of the town centre and is described as the town's main trading location, with trade counter and retail occupiers nearby including Ridgeons and Smurfit Kappa. Units off Hostmoor Avenue have seen conversions such as self storage, and a change of use like that almost always exposes the floor.

Old industrial slabs tend to be dusty, patched and out of level. Before a new finish or racking goes in, the surface needs cleaning back, repairing and levelling to a standard the new floor can live with.

BS 8204 sets three classes, checked by putting a 2m straightedge down and measuring any gap under it. SR1 permits 3mm, SR2 permits 5mm, SR3 permits 10mm. Being thin, vinyl and LVT telegraph every hollow, hence SR1 on so many of their data sheets.

Typical compound depth runs from roughly 2mm to about 10mm, though certain products are rated thicker. It flows out to a smooth surface and dries quickly, which keeps a shop or office fit-out moving.

Sometimes compound is the wrong answer. Over a slab off Hostmoor Avenue that is broken, loose or several centimetres out, a thick pour may crack and part company with the base. We would tell you that straight and quote for fixing the concrete or for new screed. For fitting out a whole unit, our commercial screeding service covers the larger work.

Levelling homes around Peas Hill and Town End

Whether the house is in Peas Hill, Town End, Little London or anywhere else in March, levelling usually comes just before the new floor. LVT and large tiles are unforgiving over a floor that was never perfectly flat, and the flaws only show once the finish goes down.

The common problems are old solid floors with dips, and the line where an original house meets an extension. Semis make up 28% of homes in March, and a rear extension on a semi usually meets the old floor at the back wall. A thin compound can feather that joint out so the new flooring runs through without a step.

Priming is what makes the compound stick. A dusty concrete floor, a calcium sulphate screed and old tiles each need a different primer, and we match it to the base. Bases needing work before compound go through floor prep first.

This is not floor sanding for timber, and it is not a DIY bag of compound. It is a prepared, primed and measured base.

FAQs

Floor Levelling in March: your questions

How flat does a floor need to be for LVT in a March house?

SR1 is what most LVT and vinyl brands want: put a 2m straightedge anywhere and the gap under it stays at 3mm or less. Any dip deeper than that can show through the finish over time. Priming, then pouring compound, normally gets a March living room there.

When does a March floor need a new screed instead of levelling compound?

Loose, cracked or badly sloping bases need more than compound. Compound is designed for a few millimetres, typically up to about 10mm. Trying to fill a deep hollow with it can cause cracking and debonding. We check the floor and tell you honestly which approach suits it.

Can you level a shop floor in March before a refit?

Yes. We clean and prime the existing slab or screed, carry out any repairs, and lay compound to the flatness the new finish needs. For shop and office refits the work can often be planned around trading or a tenant's move-in date. A fixed written price comes within 24 hours.
