Screed for Underfloor Heating in Crowborough

In Crowborough we screed over wet underfloor heating in liquid or sand and cement, set the depth over the pipes correctly and explain how to warm the floor afterwards. When a detached house gains a single storey extension or knock-through, water heating is often run across the old and new rooms together. Fitting the pipes is the heating engineer's part; they lay and test them, and then we screed.

Heating old and new rooms together in Crowborough

Running underfloor heating from a new extension back into the existing kitchen gives one warm, open floor, but it asks a lot of the screed. The old room may have less depth to play with than the new one, and the finished floor must be level across both.

A thin liquid screed laid over insulation usually solves that. With 25mm or more above the loops, it usually comes to 45 to 50mm, and because it fills every gap around them without trapping air, the room heats quicker and wastes less. A hand-laid cement floor wants around 45mm above the pipes and so ends up thicker, though it still has a place in wet areas and small rooms.

On the old side of the knock-through, the original floor may well need lifting to fit insulation and pipework. That is also the moment to check what is underneath. In houses from 1945 to 1972, which are 28% of Crowborough's homes, the original slab may be sound enough to build on or may need replacing.

Any gaps in the insulation, membrane or perimeter strip get picked up on our pre-pour check, and we can bring whatever is missing. Leave the loops pressurised while we pour, so a nicked pipe shows up there and then. For pumping and access, see liquid screed in Crowborough.

Commissioning a heated screed in Crowborough homes

In a Crowborough extension, the first few weeks after the pour decide how well a heated screed performs. Warm it slowly and the screed dries evenly instead of cracking.

Calcium sulphate will accept warmth after roughly 7 days, whereas cement mixes need three weeks (21 days) as a minimum. Whichever you have, begin with a low flow temperature and nudge it up daily for several days, as the commissioning schedule lays out. We pass that plan to both you and your heating engineer, so nobody is guessing.

Using the heating this way also helps the floor dry, which matters when a flooring fitter is waiting. The floor must still pass a moisture test before timber, LVT or tiles go down, and calcium sulphate needs its laitance sanded off first.

On the newer estates, snagging, levelling and screed repairs before flooring are more typical than a new heated screed. Where one of those floors needs attention, see screed repairs. Our guide on screed thickness shows full build-ups, and we also cover underfloor heating screed in Uckfield.

FAQs

Underfloor Heating Screed in Crowborough: your questions

What depth of screed goes over underfloor heating in a Crowborough extension?

A liquid floor needs 25mm or more over the loops, so it is typically 45 to 50mm thick on the insulation. Sand and cement needs around 45mm above them and makes for a thicker build overall. Our levels are taken from the existing house's finished floor, so the new heated room joins it flush.

Can underfloor heating be added to an older Crowborough house?

In many houses it can, though expect the existing floor to be lifted. Insulation, pipes and screed need depth, and door thresholds and stairs fix the finished level. In older houses where the solid floor is being dug out and relaid with a membrane anyway, adding heating at the same time is the simplest approach.

Why must heating be warmed up slowly on new screed?

Fresh screed is still full of water. Heating it hard from cold drives that moisture out too fast and unevenly, which can crack the screed or break its bond. A gradual heat-up, starting low and rising over several days, lets it dry evenly. The heating can start after roughly 7 days on calcium sulphate, and after 21 at the earliest on sand and cement.
