Where pumped screed pays off in Desborough
Liquid screed earns its keep on wide, open floors. Once poured, it finds its own level, gets to SR1 or SR2 flatness without a fight, and moves so little as it cures that a big room can be laid with far fewer joints than hand-laid screed would need. The bigger and simpler the area, the more of that advantage you get.
In Desborough that fits much of the work family houses need. With detached and semi-detached homes dominant, a typical project is a single-storey rear extension that knocks through to make one kitchen, dining and family room. A pumped screed covers the old and new parts in a single pour once the levels are set. The same logic applies to self-builds and new plots, and 13% of the town's homes have gone up since 2015 alone.
Depth is decided by what sits underneath. Laid floating on insulation in a home, liquid screed can be as thin as about 35mm. Put heating pipes underneath and you need 25mm or more above them, which typically brings the whole depth to 45 to 50mm. Both calcium sulphate and cement based liquid screeds are available, the first common in dry living areas and the second where the floor could get wet. The detail of the calcium sulphate material is on our anhydrite flow screed page.

Getting the pump and hose into Desborough houses
The pump stays outside. The mixer truck and pump park as close to the house as the road allows, and a hose runs from there through the front door, hallway or patio doors to the room being poured. Where a Desborough house is detached with a driveway, the hose barely has to travel. Where the house sits on a street with no off-road space, let us know about parking restrictions and shared drives when you ask for a price, so the vehicles can be placed without blocking neighbours.
Upper floors and flats are possible too, since the hose can climb a staircase, but the route has to be clear, protected and agreed with the building's owner beforehand.
Have the room prepared by the time the lorry turns up. That means perimeter strip on all the walls, the insulation covered by a membrane with every joint taped, and a dam across each doorway to hold the screed in. Any gap lets liquid screed escape under a wall or float the insulation.
Being able to stand on it within a couple of days does not mean it is dry. Flooring still waits for a moisture test, and a thicker pour takes longer. For a side-by-side look at speed and cost, see our liquid versus sand and cement comparison.
