Where pumped liquid screed earns its place in Enfield
Liquid screed is at its most useful on a large, uninterrupted floor. The rear extensions and knocked-through ground floors common on the inter-war streets of Palmers Green, Winchmore Hill, Bush Hill Park and Southgate fit that description: one pour can cover the kitchen, dining space and extension together, with no joins where the old house meets the new.
It flows round pipes and into corners without hand compaction, which is why it is so often paired with wet heating. If your extension will be heated, the cover and warm-up rules are on the underfloor heating screed page for Enfield.
Depth is set by the build-up. Over insulation in a home, a floating liquid screed usually starts from about 35mm, and over heating pipes it needs at least 25mm of cover, giving a total of roughly 45 to 50mm. Surface regularity to SR1 or SR2 is readily achievable, so tilers and LVT fitters start from a flat base.
Larger schemes lean the same way. The new flats planned at Meridian Water in Edmonton will be built with pumped liquid screeds and acoustic layers, because a pump can serve floor after floor where hand-laid screed would take far longer.
Both calcium sulphate and cement based liquid screeds exist, and the right one depends on the room and the finish. Where a small or wet room, such as a shower room, is part of the job, a traditional sand and cement floor may still be the better call for that area.
Getting the pump to an Enfield front door
Every pumped pour starts at the kerb. The mixer and pump need a place to stand, and the hose is then run through the house or down a side passage to the room. Semi-detached houses with a drive or side access are usually straightforward. Terraces, flats over shops and homes on red route or permit streets need a little more planning, so send photos of the frontage when you ask for a price.
Upper floors are possible too. A hose can be run up a stairwell or through a window to a first floor extension or a flat, provided the route is clear and protected.
Inside, the room must be ready before the lorry arrives: insulation laid, edge strip fixed, the membrane taped at the joins and the perimeter sealed so the screed cannot escape under a door. Our insulation and membrane preparation can be done by the same team.
Once poured, the floor can be walked on within 24 to 48 hours, but walkable is not dry. Drying runs at about a day per millimetre for the first 40mm and slower after that, and the screed drying guide explains how to plan flooring around it.
