Trade counters and units on Gravesend's business estates
Commercial refits are a common reason to level a floor, and Gravesend has several estates where it applies. Imperial Business Estate at West Mill mixes trade and retail units. Canal Industrial Park on Canal Road and Norfolk Road Industrial Estate, east of the centre, hold smaller units. Lion Business Park offers warehouse and hi-tech space. When a unit changes use or a showroom is refitted, the floor under the new finish has to be flat and sound.
The job starts with preparation. Old adhesive, paint and contamination come off, weak surfaces are ground back, and cracks or hollow areas are cut out and filled. Our floor preparation service covers the heavier removal work. We then prime with whatever suits the base, be it calcium sulphate, cement screed or bare concrete, before pouring and spreading the compound.
Speed matters in business premises. Fast drying compounds let the flooring follow soon after, which helps a shop or showroom reopen without a long closure. Tell us the handover date when you ask for a price, and we will choose the product and sequence to meet it.
Compound is a surface treatment, not a structural one. A warehouse slab carrying heavy loads needs a screed or repair designed for that, and our concrete floor repair service handles damaged slabs. Resin systems, polished concrete and power floated structural slabs are not on our list.
Getting Gravesend home floors flat enough for LVT
At home, the flooring usually sets the standard. LVT and sheet vinyl copy every hollow beneath them, and a large format tile over a dip can crack or lip. SR1 is what many thin sheet products ask for: the BS 8204 class where nothing deeper than 3mm shows beneath a 2m straightedge. The SR2 and SR3 classes allow 5mm and 10mm.
Homes built from 1945 to 1972 make up 31% of Gravesend's housing. Floors of that age may have been patched, re-screeded in part or covered many times, and where a newer extension joins the original house there is often a small step or ridge. A feathered layer of compound can make the two read as one floor.
Compound has a limit. Compound normally stops at around 10mm, and pouring it deeper to save a floor that needs screeding can lead to cracks and debonding. Bigger dips or a loose base mean we will tell you plainly and quote for a fresh sand and cement screed in its place. For guidance on how thin different layers can go, see our screed thickness guide.
