Matching the screed to Gravesend's housing layers
Each era of Gravesend housing tends to point to a different kind of floor.
Gravesend's older terraces tend to sit on worn solid ground floors that were never given a damp proof membrane. A renovation there usually begins with breaking out the old floor and laying insulation and a membrane before any screed, and a hand-laid sand and cement screed suits the smaller rooms and varying depths. Terraces account for 32% of homes in the town, so this is a common starting point.
The inter-war streets of King's Farm, laid out in the 1920s, and the post-war houses of Riverview Park, built in the 1960s on a former RAF airfield, are prime candidates for kitchen and garden room extensions. On those extensions the new screed must line up exactly with the slab already in the house. A wide open-plan room usually suits liquid screed pumped from the road, and if the extension will be heated, read our page on screed over underfloor heating.
Flats are a large part of the picture as well: 23% of Gravesend's homes are flats. New ones, including those planned at the Canal Basin, need acoustic layers and flat, fast drying floors ready for finishes, which is where a specified anhydrite flow screed often comes in.
Where the base is sound but uneven, new flooring may need no more than floor levelling with a thin compound.

Access, timing and trade units around Gravesend
Getting materials to the room comes first. Pump and mixer have to stand somewhere, and for a house with no drive that normally means the kerb outside. Mention parking restrictions, narrow frontages or a shared rear path when you ask for a price, so the day can be planned properly. A hose will reach deep into a house from the street, and where a pump is not worth bringing, sand and cement can go in by barrow instead.
Then there is timing. The screed goes in once the building is weathertight and before the flooring, and the drying time has to sit in the programme. On an extension, book the pour as soon as the roof and windows are in, and plan the kitchen fit around a moisture test rather than a guess.
Commercial work follows the same sequence under more pressure. Trade counters and showrooms at Imperial Business Estate in West Mill, and warehouse space at Lion Business Park, call for hard-wearing screeds, floor preparation and repairs, usually arranged around opening hours. Smaller units at Canal Industrial Park and Norfolk Road Industrial Estate follow the same pattern.
