Flat floors for Chertsey offices and studios
Chertsey has sizeable corporate sites. Samsung Electronics moved its UK head office here in 2005, Compass Group has its head office in the town, and Longcross Film Studios occupies the former military vehicle research site. Thorpe Park lies on the northern boundary. Offices, studios and attractions like these need flat, durable floors, and a refit of an office floor usually begins with getting the base flat enough for the new finish.
Flatness is judged to BS 8204 by laying a 2m straightedge across the floor. The gap underneath may reach 3mm for SR1, 5mm for SR2 and 10mm for SR3. SR1 is the class many thin sheet finishes demand, so an office that looked fine under carpet tiles can fail the test once vinyl or LVT is chosen.
Most compound goes on between roughly 2mm and 10mm, and certain products can build thicker. We clean the floor first, then prime it to match the base: concrete, sand and cement, calcium sulphate or leftover adhesive. When compound comes away, a mismatched primer is normally the cause. On an office refit, quick setting products keep the fit-out team moving.
Where a floor needs more than a thin layer, larger sites often call for high strength or fibre reinforced screed, and our commercial screeding service covers that. A tired, worn slab may want grinding back to sound concrete before we pour anything on it.
Levelling where Chertsey extensions meet older floors
Some 27% of Chertsey's homes were built between 1973 and 1999, so many original floors here have had decades to settle. Build an extension onto one of those houses and the new slab seldom lines up exactly with the original. A self levelling compound can bring them together and take out small dips, so a single floor finish runs from old room to new without a ridge at the doorway.
Flats need a little more care. Where a flat owner is replacing a floor, the acoustic layers that protect the neighbours below have to stay intact, so the levelling goes on top of a sound, stable base rather than disturbing what lies beneath.
Compound smooths a floor; it does not hold one up. Poured thick over a base that ought to be replaced, it can crack and lose its grip. A floor that rings hollow, breaks up or sits further out than compound can correct needs replacing, and relaying it in sand and cement explains how. For a shop or office in a nearby town, see floor levelling in Walton-on-Thames.
