Underfloor Heating Screed in Marlow

In Marlow homes we screed over wet underfloor heating, setting the depth, pipe cover and commissioning plan the system calls for. Since most of the town's houses predate 2000, heated floors here are more likely to go into an extension or a renovated room than onto a new estate. Floor height is therefore the main concern, because the heated floor has to meet the rooms on either side at the same height. We do not install the pipework; your heating engineer lays and tests it, and we follow on with the screed.

Fitting heated floors into Marlow's older houses

Just 9% of homes in Marlow went up after 2000. In anything older, the doors, the stairs and the neighbouring rooms already fix the finished floor level, and a heated floor has to fit underneath it.

Take a pre-1919 house whose uninsulated floor is coming up anyway: the dig-out makes space for insulation, pipes and screed, so it is the obvious moment to add heating. If the old floor is staying, the build-up is tighter, and a pumped screed often helps because it can be laid thinner.

Over the pipes, liquid screed needs a cover of at least 25mm, giving roughly 45 to 50mm overall. Because it flows round every pipe and traps no air, the floor warms more quickly and runs more efficiently. Sand and cement calls for about 45mm of cover and careful compaction, as any void beside a pipe turns into a cold, weak patch. How the pump gets screed to the room is explained on our liquid screed page for Marlow.

Settle the levels before a slab or insulation is ordered. Measure down from the existing floor, take off the finish and the screed, and see what remains for pipes and insulation. We go over edge strip, membrane and insulation before pouring, and if any are missing, our insulation and membranes service can supply them.

Heated extensions on Marlow semis and garden rooms

Semis are 24% of Marlow's homes, and a back extension on one is a common spot for a heated kitchen. Which screed to use depends on the room. In a big open kitchen, pumped screed is quick and flat; for a shower room on the same circuit, choose a cement based screed, since calcium sulphate should not go where floors may get wet.

Garden rooms can have underfloor heating too, provided the base is insulated and the building is weathertight before we pour. They often stand well away from the road, so tell us how a hose or barrow can reach yours when you ask for a price.

Commission slowly. A calcium sulphate floor in a Marlow extension can usually have its heating switched on once a week has passed, at around 7 days, whereas sand and cement has to sit for at least 21. Start cool, lift the temperature a notch at a time across several days, and hold it before making any change. Your heating engineer decides the flow temperatures, and we write down what the screed needs from that schedule. Warming the floor is no substitute for testing its moisture before the finish goes on, as our guide to screed drying sets out.

FAQs

Underfloor Heating Screed in Marlow: your questions

Can underfloor heating go into an old Marlow floor without digging it out?

Sometimes, where there is enough height to spare. Thin liquid screed over low-profile insulation and pipes adds the least depth, but the floor still rises. If that would foul door thresholds or the stairs, digging out is usually better, and in an uninsulated older floor it deals with the damp and cold at the same time.

What happens if the heating is turned up too soon after screeding?

As it dries unevenly, the screed may crack or curl, and the damage sometimes shows only once the finish is down. Hold off for about 7 days if the screed is calcium sulphate, or no less than 21 if it is sand and cement; after that, the system starts cool and climbs gradually over several days.

Do you install the underfloor heating pipes as well?

No. Pipe installation is outside K & B's work. Your heating engineer lays the pipes, clips them and pressure tests them, and should keep the system under pressure while we pour. We then lay the screed with the right cover and hand over heat-up guidance so your engineer can commission the system.
