Underfloor Heating Screed in Stamford

Where wet underfloor heating goes into a Stamford floor, we lay the screed on top in either a liquid mix or sand and cement, set the cover over the pipes properly and give you a schedule for warming it up. Two kinds of house matter here. New homes at Stamford East and Stamford North will largely use flowing screed over underfloor heating, while existing semis, 36% of the town's homes, can add heating during kitchen extensions and renovations. We do not install the pipes, so we work alongside the heating engineer.

Heated ground floors in Stamford East and Stamford North

On a new estate, underfloor heating is often the whole ground floor's heat source, and the screed is what makes it work. It spreads heat evenly, protects the pipes and gives the flooring a flat, solid base. A screed with gaps around the pipes or too little cover over them leads to cold spots and cracking, and neither fault can be put right without breaking the floor out again. The depth rules are simple. Liquid needs 25mm or more above the pipes, so the whole floor usually ends up 45 to 50mm. With sand and cement the cover is around 45mm. On new plots liquid has the advantage, flowing round each pipe without leaving voids, so the heat spreads evenly and the room warms more quickly. About 10% of Stamford homes date from 2000 to 2014, and what is coming next is bigger. Stamford North proposes around 1,300 homes between Little Casterton Road and Ryhall Road, and Bellway was recommended for approval for 111 homes north of Uffington Road. On housing like this the screed date feeds directly into the heating commissioning date, and that in turn sets when flooring can go down and when a buyer can move in. Many new-build specifications name a calcium sulphate product. For grades and the checks that go with them, see the anhydrite screed page for Stamford.

Adding heating to an existing Stamford house

In an older Stamford house, adding underfloor heating mostly comes down to how much height you have. Doors, thresholds and the existing floor in the next room fix how thick the new build-up can be, and there has to be room for insulation, pipes and enough screed to cover them. A liquid screed often helps because it can be laid thinner over the pipes than sand and cement. Heated extensions and garden rooms are simpler, because the floor level is set from scratch. In both cases we check the insulation, membrane and perimeter strip before pouring. That perimeter strip gives a warm floor room to expand so it does not crack where it meets the walls. In a listed or conservation area building, the floor build-up is agreed with the owner and conservation officer first, and a heated screed may not be the route they accept. Once the screed is down, the heating goes on in stages. Calcium sulphate can normally be warmed after roughly 7 days, but sand and cement needs 21 days or more. The temperature rises gradually over several days. Read screed drying times for more, or see underfloor heating screed in Peterborough if your project is nearer there.

FAQs

Underfloor Heating Screed in Stamford: your questions

Liquid or sand and cement over underfloor heating?

Liquid screed is the usual choice over wet underfloor heating because it surrounds the pipes completely, can be thinner, and can often be warmed sooner. Sand and cement still works, especially where the room may get wet or needs a cement base, but it must be about 45mm over the pipes and fully compacted around them.

How long after screeding can underfloor heating be commissioned?

Allow roughly 7 days with calcium sulphate, and 21 days or more with sand and cement. Commissioning should be gradual, starting with a low water temperature and increasing it in steps over several days. Your heating installer and the screed product set the exact schedule for a Stamford house.

Does K & B supply the underfloor heating system?

No, our part is the screed. The pipes are fitted and pressure tested by your heating engineer before our team turns up. We can check or supply insulation, membrane and edge strip, and we agree the screed depth with the installer so the pipe cover is right for the system.
