Heated floors in Tewkesbury's later twentieth century houses
Some 30% of Tewkesbury's homes date from 1973 to 1999. Houses of that age are often being extended at the back or opened up into a kitchen and family room, and underfloor heating is the natural choice for a wide floor with glazing along one side.
The screed does most of the work in a wet system. Every pipe has to be fully wrapped, with no voids, so the warmth spreads evenly. That is why pumped liquid screed in Tewkesbury is normally used, as it runs in around each pipe. Allow 25mm or more over the pipework, which puts the floor at roughly 45 to 50mm overall. Mixed and laid by hand, a cement floor wants about 45mm on top of the pipework, so it ends up thicker.
Retrofits are harder. In an existing room the floor height is often fixed by the doors, the stairs and the kitchen, so there may not be space for insulation, pipes and a full screed. A thinner liquid section often fits where cement would not, and we measure the layers before we quote. Our screed thickness guide adds them up for you.
On a flood-aware ground floor, cement based screed over the pipes may be preferred. We will discuss that with you and the heating engineer before the pour, so the choice of screed, the depth and the heat-up plan are settled in advance.
Commissioning a new heated floor in Tewkesbury
Most heated floor problems start with the first warm-up. A screed that is heated too hard, too soon can crack or curl. The safe approach is to wait, then bring the temperature up slowly.
With a calcium sulphate pour, the heating can normally go on at about 7 days; a sand and cement floor should be left at least 21 days before it is warmed. After that the heat is raised step by step, held, and later lowered, to the schedule set by the screed manufacturer and your heating engineer. We hand over that guidance in writing.
By the time we pour, the pipes should be down, clipped and pressure tested, sitting on insulation with the edge strip fitted. If you want those layers supplied or looked over, our insulation and membrane layers service covers it. Tell us the pipe spacing and the depth of the insulation when you ask for a price, because both affect how much screed the floor needs and how long it will take to dry.
For a flowing screed poured over pipes, published UK rates for 2026 run between £20 and £35 a square metre. For the same service in Evesham, see our underfloor heating screed in Evesham page.
