Underfloor Heating Screed in Huntingdon

Over wet underfloor heating in Huntingdon we lay liquid or hand-laid sand and cement, set to the right depth over the pipes, and leave you a written heat-up schedule. North of town at Alconbury Weald more than 5,000 homes are planned, and new homes of that kind are the likeliest here to use underfloor heating in a flowing screed. The screed is ours to lay; the pipes are your heating engineer's.

Underfloor heating screed for Alconbury Weald and Huntingdon extensions

Homes built since 2000 are 22% of Huntingdon, and those since 2015 are 6%. That share will change as Alconbury Weald grows on the former RAF and USAF airfield. New homes there can be designed with heating in the floor from the start, which lets the insulation, pipes and screed depth be planned together.

For existing houses, a heated extension is the more usual route. A rear extension with a kitchen and family area is a natural place for underfloor heating, and the screed over it has to sit flush with the old floor next door.

Either type of screed can cover a wet system. Pumped screed wants 25mm minimum over the pipes, which tends to make the floor 45 to 50mm in total. It flows round the pipes without leaving air pockets, which is why it heats up quickly and evenly. Sand and cement goes about 45mm over the pipes and must be well compacted round each run.

First, your heating engineer lays the pipes and pressure tests them. Insulation, membrane and edge strip get checked before we pour, and we can supply whichever is missing. When it is done, the surface is flat enough for engineered wood, LVT or tiles.

For extensions where the floor needs to be ready quickly, pumped liquid screed is usually the partner. The screed thickness guide sets out cover depths in full.

Retrofits and heat-up in older Huntingdon homes

Adding underfloor heating to an older Huntingdon home is mostly a question of height. In a terraced house, the ground floor has doors and thresholds fixed at their current level, and an existing solid floor rarely leaves room for insulation, pipes and screed on top. Most often the old floor has to come out so the new layers have room. Pumped screed eases things, needing a slimmer layer above the pipes than a hand-laid mix.

The first heat-up needs the same care in every house. Calcium sulphate normally lets the heating come on from around 7 days after pouring; with sand and cement it is 21 days at the least. Begin cool, step the water temperature up a little over several days, hold it, then ease it down again. That schedule comes in writing, so your heating engineer and you are working from one sheet.

If the layers beneath need attention first, see insulation and membranes. For heated floors a little to the south, see underfloor heating screed in St Neots.

FAQs

Underfloor Heating Screed in Huntingdon: your questions

Is liquid or sand and cement screed better over underfloor heating?

Liquid screed usually works better with heating: it flows fully around the pipes, needs less cover at a minimum of 25mm, and heats up faster. Sand and cement works too, at about 45mm over the pipes, and suits smaller rooms or wet areas. For a new Huntingdon extension with a large heated floor, liquid screed is the common choice.

What happens if the heating is turned up too soon?

Too much heat, or heat too early, can crack a new screed, lift its edges or break its bond with the layers below. So commissioning starts low and climbs slowly, beginning around 7 days for calcium sulphate and 21 days or later for sand and cement. On a Huntingdon new build the written schedule should be followed even when the programme is tight.

How much does an underfloor heating screed cost in Huntingdon?

Liquid screed over underfloor heating sits at £20 to £35 per m² in published UK figures for 2026. For a Huntingdon floor the figure also follows the area, the cover needed, how the pump reaches the room and whether insulation and edge strip are in our scope. Once we have seen the plans, a fixed figure follows in writing within 24 hours.
