Sand and Cement Screed in Havant

Our sand and cement screed in Havant is done the traditional way, with each batch mixed on site and then tamped and finished by hand. In this town it is usually the answer when owners of post-war homes take up an original concrete floor to add insulation, or lay new screed under a kitchen or bathroom refit. Early post-war houses were built in a variety of ways, so the first step on any job is checking what the existing slab is made of and whether it can stay.

Replacing original floors in Havant's post-war semis

Semis make up 30% of Havant's homes, and together with terraces they account for much of the post-war building that defines the town. Owners replace the original concrete ground floors in these houses to add insulation, and they want a warmer room without raising the floor level. So the old slab is broken up and removed, the ground is dug lower, and a membrane, insulation and fresh screed go back in that order.

For a relay like this, hand-laid screed makes sense. It is mixed on site to suit each room, so a narrow hall, a kitchen and a downstairs toilet can each get the right depth. Over insulation in a house, the screed goes down 65mm thick. It can also be bonded directly to a sound slab at 25 to 40mm, where the existing concrete is good and only the top needs renewing.

Because early post-war homes vary in construction, the slab is checked first. Some can be kept and overlaid; others need to come out. Where the base needs work before screeding, our floor preparation service covers breaking out, shot blasting and cleaning, and insulation and membranes covers the layers underneath.

Only 5% of homes in Havant were built before 1919, so a period renovation is less likely here than a post-war refit. The same hand-laid method applies to both. Published 2026 prices put this hand-laid work between £18 and £25 per m².

Kitchen and bathroom refits across Havant homes

The other common reason for a new screed in Havant is a refit. When a kitchen or bathroom is stripped out, the floor beneath can turn out to be uneven, cracked or at the wrong height for the new finish. Laying fresh sand and cement gives the fitter a true floor again.

Bathrooms and wet rooms are where sand and cement does something calcium sulphate cannot. We can shape it so water runs to the drain, and once cured it does not mind getting wet. A walk-in shower floor, a ground floor wet room or a utility room at risk of leaks all need a cement screed. Where a thinner topping fixed to a sound slab is enough, see bonded screed.

The trade-off is drying. At roughly 1 day per mm for the first 40mm, then slower, a 65mm floor takes weeks before tiles or timber can go on, so the kitchen fitter's date should follow a moisture check. Rapid drying additives or a quick drying screed can shorten that wait. If the floor is sound and only uneven, levelling a Havant floor may be the faster route.

FAQs

Sand and Cement Screed in Havant: your questions

Can I screed my own floor?

A full floating screed is harder than it looks. The mix, compaction, levels and falls all have to be right across the whole room, and faults often show only when the flooring goes down. On a Havant refit, where the new screed has to meet existing thresholds and a new kitchen plinth, the floor is usually worth handing to a contractor with a fixed price.

How long before I can tile a sand and cement screed?

Expect roughly a day per millimetre over the first 40mm and slower going after, which puts a 65mm floor many weeks away from tiles or timber, more or less depending on airflow and room conditions. A moisture reading should decide the date, not a count of days. In a Havant kitchen refit, build that wait into the programme before the tiler is booked.

Should a Havant post-war floor be dug out or overlaid?

It depends on the slab. If the existing concrete is sound and dry, and there is enough height, a bonded screed or levelling may be enough. If it is cracked, damp or the room needs insulation, digging out and relaying with a membrane, insulation and a floating screed is the lasting option. Because early post-war houses vary, we check before quoting.
