Matching the screed to Wellingborough's estates and streets
Wellingborough grew in stages, and each stage left a different kind of floor behind.
The London overspill agreements of the 1960s and 1970s produced the large Hemmingwell, Kingsway and Queensway estates. Owners there regularly add extensions, convert garages or replace worn floors. A wide kitchen extension that opens onto the old house is quickest with pumped liquid screed, because it settles flat across the whole room in one visit and has far fewer joints.
Older terraces nearer the centre raise a different problem. Their solid floors may be damp or broken up, and the answer is usually to dig out, lay a damp proof membrane and rebuild. For that we use sand and cement, compacted by hand: it gets round the tight doorways and small rooms of a terrace and gives the floor the cement base it needs.
Stanton Cross, planned for 3,200 homes with schools and shops, and Glenvale Park are where the newest houses are going up. Most of the houses going up there have underfloor heating pipes with a flowing screed poured over them. Should the drawings for one of those houses call up a calcium sulphate grade, what the anhydrite codes mean is set out on its own page, and screeding over wet heating pipes deals with pipe cover and when the heating can first be switched on.
Flats add one more requirement: acoustic screeds between floors. And where a floor is sound but uneven, a full new screed may be more than you need, because a thin levelling compound can take it flat for LVT or tiles. We also cover Burrow's Bush, Hatton Park and Redhill Grange.

Park Farm, Finedon Road and timing a Wellingborough pour
The town has four main industrial estates: Park Farm, where Cummins is based, Denington, Finedon Road, and the Leyland Trading Estate on the site of the British Leyland foundry that closed in 1981. Factory and warehouse floors like these usually call for high strength screed, repairs or grinding rather than a domestic mix. Resin coatings, polished concrete and structural power floated slabs are outside what K & B does.
Back in the town's streets, where the screed lorry can stop shapes the whole day. A detached Wellingborough house with its own drive has room for the mixer off the road. The terraces nearer the centre are another matter, because the lorry may end up kerbside, so tell us about yellow lines, permit bays or a shared alley at pricing stage.
On any build, the screed sits between trades. Before our team turns up, the room needs to keep the weather out, the plasterer's wet work has to be finished, and if there are heating pipes they must already have held a pressure test. Kitchens, doors and skirting go in afterwards. Drying then sets the pace. People can walk on it carefully once 24 to 48 hours have passed, yet the floor will not take its covering for weeks: allow roughly a day per millimetre over the first 40mm of depth, with drying slowing down below that. So give the flooring fitter a date once the screed is in, rather than squeezing the screed in before them, and have a moisture reading taken before anything goes down.
