Matching a screed to Merton's houses and new blocks
Census 2021 counted 215,186 people in Merton, and the housing is weighted towards houses rather than flats. Terraced homes alone make up 36% of the stock, and each era of house brings its own kind of floor job.
The borough's Victorian terraces often need a membrane and a new screed under a kitchen extension, because the old ground floor was never built to keep damp out. Rebuilding a floor like that is normally a job for sand and cement laid by hand, on top of fresh insulation.
Inter-war houses in Morden and on the St Helier estate are different. Many have suspended timber floors, and owners replace them with insulated solid floors. That is a good time to put heating in, and the screed over underfloor heating page explains depths and heat-up.
The newest homes are coming on three estates: High Path in South Wimbledon and Eastfields and Ravensbury in Mitcham, where Clarion Housing Group is delivering around 2,550 new homes over fifteen years. Those blocks will be fitted with underfloor heating and floating screeds, and specifications there may call for calcium sulphate flow screed to a named grade.
For an open-plan extension, a pumped liquid screed is often the quickest route to a flat floor. A floor that is solid but has dips and ridges may need nothing more than levelling compound.

Access and timing across Wimbledon, Mitcham and Morden
Where a house has a driveway, a pump or a mixer has somewhere to stand. On a terraced street it is harder, and the mixer may need to park on the road. If there are permit bays, a tight side passage or access only from the back, mention it when you first get in touch so we can plan around it.
Fix the pour for a date after the windows and roof are in, the wet plaster has gone on and any underfloor pipes have passed their pressure test. Once laid, the screed has to dry before flooring can go down, so plan the kitchen fitter and tiler around it rather than leaving it to the last minute.
Shop and office refits in Merton's town centres, with Wimbledon the largest and Mitcham and Morden the others, are a separate kind of job. The Clarion estate programme also includes about 9,000 square metres of commercial and community space. For bigger floor areas like those, see screeding for commercial units.
Merton Abbey Mills, the former Liberty textile works on the River Wandle, is now a crafts market with Grade II listed buildings, where any floor repairs need care.
