From Market Hill to Hanchet End: floors across Haverhill
Haverhill is largely a modern town. Census 2021 recorded 26,704 people in its built-up area. Housing estates from the 1950s onwards surround the old centre, among them Clements, Chalkstone, Parkway and Chimswell. Terraced houses are the most common type, at 37% of homes. We also cover Wilsey and Hazel Stub, and Hanchet End, the hamlet on the western edge that the town has absorbed.
The work these houses typically need falls into three groups.
First, extensions. A new kitchen or family room at the back has to finish flush with the existing floor. For a kitchen opened up into a new back room on an estate such as Clements or Chalkstone, pumped liquid screed goes in thin, flat and fast and wraps round wet heating pipes; heated floors in Haverhill explains the cover those pipes need and when the heating can come on.
Second, tired original floors. Floors that have settled or been patched over the years may only need a smooth top layer before new flooring, and floor levelling in Haverhill explains when compound is enough. Where the old floor has failed, or had little or no insulation to begin with, it can be dug out and rebuilt with a hand-laid sand and cement floor.
Third, specified new build floors. If the architect's drawings for a new plot specify a calcium sulphate grade, expect its surface skin (laitance) to be sanded away and the screed moisture tested before any floor covering.
The older town survives around Market Hill and the High Street, with the Grade II listed town hall and the Tudor Anne of Cleves' House on Hamlet Road. If your building is listed, talk to the council before any floor comes up.

Planning a screed date on a Haverhill extension
Book the screed early and fix the date late. We pour when the extension can keep the weather out, meaning the roof is on, the frames are glazed, doors are hung and the wet plastering is finished. Heated floors add one more condition, as the pipes need to be fixed down and to have passed a pressure test. The screed then needs drying time, so the kitchen fitter and flooring layer follow it, not the other way round.
Pour day itself hinges on parking, because the mixer and the pump must stand within hose reach of the extension. Tell us whether there is a driveway, a parking bay or only the road outside, and how far the hose has to run through the house or round the side.
Industry dominates Haverhill's economy, with a large industrial area on the south side of town, with plants run by firms such as EuroAPI, Sigma-Aldrich and International Flavors & Fragrances, and a research park where The EpiCentre stands beside the bypass. Process and laboratory floors need flatness and strength planned in from the start, with the specialist finish applied over a sound base. Our commercial screeding service deals with that side of the work.
